🛑 THE PROBLEM:

NAPA Auto Parts managed a large ecosystem of digital products—ranging from e-commerce experiences to internal tools—built by multiple teams over time. As the platform grew, inconsistencies in UI components, visual styles, interaction patterns, and accessibility standards became increasingly common. This fragmentation created usability issues for customers, increased design and development effort, and made it difficult to maintain a unified brand experience across channels.

Without a centralized design system, teams frequently recreated components, duplicated work, and introduced variations that made the interface feel disjointed. The absence of clear guidelines, reusable patterns, and scalable foundations slowed down product delivery and created significant design debt. To support future growth and deliver a modern, cohesive digital experience, NAPA needed a unified design system that brought consistency, efficiency, and clarity to all touchpoints.

🎨 COLOR FOUNDATIONS:

The color foundations define the visual identity of NAPA across digital experiences. The palette is divided into brand colors, functional colors, neutrals, and semantic states—each carefully tested for contrast, readability, and accessibility. These guidelines help teams create interfaces that feel cohesive and aligned with the NAPA brand while supporting a wide range of UI components, alerts, backgrounds, and interactive elements.

🔠 TYPOGRAPHY GUIDELINES:

Typography plays a key role in creating clarity and structure across the NAPA experience. The system outlines font families, responsive type scales, and usage rules for headings, body text, captions, and labels. Every style is optimized for legibility across devices and meets accessibility standards to support both dense informational screens and marketing-focused layouts.

📚 SECTIONS:

The following sections break down the core foundations and component libraries that bring the NAPA Design System to life. From color, typography, and iconography to buttons, forms, layouts, and patterns—each area includes usage rules, best practices, and implementation details to help designers and developers create cohesive, high-quality interfaces.

🔷 ICONOGRAPHY:

A cohesive icon set strengthens NAPA’s digital identity by enhancing clarity and reducing cognitive load. Designed for scalability and consistency, these icons improve user comprehension and create a polished, modern interface across all platforms.

🏷 LOGOS:

Approved logo versions and usage rules that preserve NAPA’s brand clarity and consistency across all digital environments.

⚠️ CHALLENGE:

NAPA Auto Parts managed multiple digital products built by different teams, resulting in inconsistent UI patterns, duplicated components, and a fragmented visual identity. The challenge was to create a unified design system that could scale across products, support future development, and maintain brand integrity—while also improving accessibility and reducing design and development inefficiencies. Aligning cross-functional teams around a single source of truth required clear documentation, scalable architecture, and a system flexible enough to support both internal tools and customer-facing experiences.

🚀 Impact

The Design System established a unified visual and functional language across all NAPA digital products, providing a scalable foundation that significantly reduced fragmentation and design inconsistencies. The system equipped product and engineering teams with reusable components, clear guidelines, and standardized patterns—accelerating delivery while improving overall quality and accessibility.

By implementing this Design System, NAPA gained a clear path to:

  • Create a consistent brand experience across all digital touchpoints

  • Reduce design and development time through reusable foundations

  • Improve accessibility and readability across interfaces

  • Streamline collaboration between design, product, and engineering teams

  • Support long-term scalability for new features and products

The Design System ultimately positioned NAPA to deliver more cohesive, efficient, and user-centered digital experiences while strengthening the brand’s identity across platforms.
