🛑 THE PROBLEM:

During the height of the crypto boom, TradeStation found itself losing visibility and relevance as new competitors—especially Coinbase, Robinhood, and Webull—quickly gained massive adoption through simpler onboarding, stronger brand positioning, and far more intuitive user experiences. While these platforms were capturing millions of new users, TradeStation’s digital experience felt complex, technical, and outdated in comparison.

🎯 Goals

To understand why these competitors were outperforming and how they communicated their value so effectively, TradeStation needed a structured competitive analysis. The goal was to examine:

  • Understand how leading crypto competitors position themselves through branding, messaging, and visual identity.

  • Analyze the onboarding experience of Coinbase, Robinhood, and Webull to identify usability patterns that attract new investors.

  • Evaluate each platform’s unique selling proposition across websites, apps, and social media.

  • Identify the key value points competitors highlight to earn trust and differentiate themselves in a crowded market.

  • Uncover the design and communication strategies that make these platforms more approachable for new and intermediate users.

  • Reveal gaps and opportunities for TradeStation to modernize its experience, improve acquisition, and stay competitive during the rapid growth of the crypto market.

This research would reveal the gaps between TradeStation and the leading crypto platforms—and uncover the UX, messaging, and positioning strategies needed for the company to stay competitive in a rapidly shifting market.

🔍 UX Research

To understand why Coinbase, Robinhood, and Webull were outperforming TradeStation during the crypto boom, I conducted a structured competitive analysis across product features, messaging strategies, and overall user experience. For each competitor—and for TradeStation itself—I evaluated the full spectrum of their crypto offerings, including:

  • Trading functionalities and how easily users could execute crypto orders

  • Order Placement Capability (OPC) and the efficiency of placing and managing trades

  • Quality and depth of crypto information, including educational content

  • Rewards and incentives offered to attract and retain users

  • Brand presentation and public image, both on web and mobile

  • Marketing messaging and how each platform positioned its value

  • Key reasons they communicated for choosing their platform

  • Unique selling propositions across social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)

  • Crypto interest or dividends, when applicable

  • News integration and real-time information

  • Pre-login experience, including clarity, trust-building, and ease of onboarding

  • Company values and how they were expressed through content and design

  • Full list of available crypto assets to compare breadth of offering

This comprehensive evaluation provided a clear view of how top competitors appealed to beginners and experienced traders alike—and highlighted the specific UX, communication, and feature gaps TradeStation needed to address to remain competitive in the rapidly expanding crypto market.

🔎 Key Findings

As I navigated through the crypto boom of 2021 alongside TradeStation, it became clear that the company was trying to compete in a race that had suddenly accelerated. New players like Coinbase, Robinhood, and Webull were not just attracting users—they were reshaping expectations. My competitive analysis quickly revealed why.

The first major insight came the moment I compared the pre-login experiences. Coinbase and Webull welcomed users with rich, transparent information—live prices, trending assets, educational content, and clear pathways into the platform. Just by landing on their pages, users already felt informed and empowered.
TradeStation, on the other hand, offered almost nothing before login. It felt like a closed door at a moment when competitors were turning their platforms into open bookstores where you could browse freely.

As I moved deeper into the analysis, another theme became impossible to ignore: simplicity wins.
Robinhood was the best example. Clean screens, friendly language, and frictionless flows made crypto trading feel accessible—even fun. Coinbase mixed clarity with trust, blending institutional-grade security messaging with a beginner-friendly UI. Webull leaned more advanced but remained structured and consistent.
TradeStation, although powerful, felt dense. The UI overloaded new users with options, data, and steps. What should feel exciting instead felt intimidating.

A third insight emerged from analyzing their marketing messaging. Robinhood positioned itself as the door to financial freedom: simple, commission-free, and approachable. Coinbase leaned heavily into safety, credibility, and crypto leadership. Webull emphasized data depth and global visibility.
TradeStation lacked a clear narrative for crypto. It was trying to speak to everyone—and ended up speaking to no one.

Then there were the features users cared about most.
Competitors excelled in areas such as:

  • zero-fee trades,

  • crypto-to-crypto conversions,

  • large asset availability,

  • educational resources,

  • intuitive buy flows.

TradeStation had strengths of its own—advanced charting, powerful tools, deep market data—but they weren’t the features driving mass adoption during the crypto surge.

Finally, the biggest insight tied everything together:
Platforms that made users feel informed, safe, and guided were winning. Platforms that felt complex, closed, or outdated were not.

This analysis painted a clear picture for TradeStation: if they wanted to reclaim relevance in the crypto space, they needed more than new features—they needed a new experience, a clearer story, and a more user-centered approach to crypto.

🔀 how to trade features

As part of the competitive analysis, I examined the full trading flow for each platform — TradeStation, Coinbase, Robinhood, and Webull — to understand how users move from selecting a cryptocurrency to completing a trade. This comparison highlighted how each platform balances simplicity, flexibility, and the level of control offered to the user. While some competitors prioritize ease of use with streamlined buy/sell actions, others provide more advanced tools, limit orders, and detailed market data. By mapping these flows side-by-side, I was able to identify usability gaps, friction points, and opportunities for TradeStation to simplify its trading experience while maintaining the power of its advanced tools.

👤 Pre-login experience

To understand how each competitor attracts and educates users before they ever create an account, I analyzed the full pre-login experience across Coinbase, Robinhood, Webull, and TradeStation. What emerged was a clear picture of how design, transparency, and content shape first impressions. Some platforms use rich market data, real-time prices, and clean visuals to build trust instantly, while others offer minimal information and unintentionally create barriers to engagement. By comparing these approaches side-by-side, I identified the strategies that most effectively inform, reassure, and convert potential users — insights that later shaped key recommendations for TradeStation’s onboarding and acquisition experience.

📄 SUMMARY:

This competitive analysis revealed how quickly crypto-focused platforms were evolving—and how differently each one communicated value, educated users, and guided them into trading. By examining Coinbase, Robinhood, and Webull side-by-side, I uncovered the patterns that make these experiences feel intuitive, trustworthy, and accessible, as well as the friction points that hold users back. These insights gave TradeStation a clear understanding of where they stood in the market, what modern users expected, and which experience gaps offered the greatest opportunity for improvement. Ultimately, this research set the foundation for strategic UX recommendations that helped TradeStation move closer to the level of clarity, simplicity, and confidence delivered by leading competitors.
